The U.S. Open happens to be a Father’s Day golf tradition on the networks of NBC. Who watches golf on Father’s Day? Dads do. What else are dads known for? Their jokes, of course. With that, U.S. Open Mic: The Search for America’s Best Dad Joke was born. Each campaign extension combined golf with stand-up comedy as a way to leverage humor. An influencer kit featuring a mashup of a microphone stand and the tournament’s pin flags went to NBC personalities and golf-centric influencers. For the public, pop-up putting-green-meets-comedy-club stages allowed people from coast to coast to perform, capture and share jokes. All took a swing at glory by “standing up” for dad on comedy’s newest, biggest stage.
The broad appeal brought in big names. Pro golfers like Rory McIlroy participated, along with the biggest stars of NASCAR and Indy Car. Olympians, Premier Leaguers and celebrities got in on the act too. In the end, it became “One of the biggest and most successful NBC Golf activations.” That’s no joke!
